Compare Total Downtime and Repair Cost—not Just Hourly Labor

Evaluate the complete repair cycle, transportation, towing, waiting time, replacement capacity, and route impact when comparing mobile and shop service.

Evaluate the complete repair cycle, transportation, towing, waiting time, replacement capacity, and route impact when comparing mobile and shop service.

Measure Total Downtime—Not Technician Arrival Time

A provider advertising a fast response does not necessarily deliver the fastest return to service.

Measure the entire repair cycle:

2.Service provider contacted
3.Technician assigned
4.Vehicle evaluated
5.Estimate issued
6.Repair approved
7.Parts obtained
8.Repair completed
9.Repair verified
10.Vehicle returned to operation

A mobile technician may arrive quickly but be unable to complete the job. A shop may begin later but finish the complete repair sooner.

Choose the service model based on total expected downtime.

Compare the Complete Cost

The lowest repair estimate may not be the lowest-cost option.

Mobile-Service Costs May Include:

  • Additional visits
  • Site or environmental charges

Shop-Service Costs May Include:

  • Towing
  • Driver transportation
  • Shop labor

  • Rental replacement
  • Route disruption
  • Lost productive time

For a delivery fleet, operational costs can exceed the repair invoice. A slightly higher mobile-service charge may be justified if it eliminates towing and returns the truck to service before the next dispatch.

Conversely, repeated mobile visits for a complex problem can cost more than sending the vehicle directly to the correct repair facility.

Protect Routes with Replacement Capacity

The repair decision should be separated from the route-coverage decision.

Waiting to learn whether a vehicle can be repaired the same day may leave the operation without enough time to secure a replacement.

When a critical truck goes out of service:

1.Evaluate the defect.
2.Estimate the realistic repair timeline.
3.Identify the next scheduled use.
4.Check owned spare capacity.
5.Review available rental vehicles.
6.Assign replacement equipment when the route is at risk.
7.Continue managing the repair independently.
